Three-dimensional aperture synthesis imaging
At MMU 3-D (three-dimensional) imaging algorithms have been developed to enable rapid forward simulation and inversion to simulate the performance of next generation aperture synthesis imaging systems, building on validations from previous demonstrators. Next generation imagers will screen: 1) persons (entering e.g. transport networks & public functions) for all threats concealed under clothing and 2) vehicles crossing borders for stowaways. New software for AVSEC security screening portal now demonstrates capabilities for the recognition of metal and non-metallic threats concealed on persons and in their baggage.
Imaging & sensing for security screening, all-weather capabilities & space
In QinetiQ (2001-2011) I led the bidding and development of the aperture synthesis radio astronomy technique for terrestrial PMMW imaging and satellite based earth observation (to monitor climate and weather), by designing and operating a suite of interferometric proof-of-concept imagers working in the near-field and far-field, from 12 GHz to 183 GHz. Internationally this was the first demonstration of real-time aperture synthesis imagery. The approach minimises the volume of PMMW imagers, enabling flat-panel architecture systems to be conformally integrated into platform infrastructures and novel 3-D imaging in the near-field. For this work I forged the national collaborations with industry and academia, and worked with aperture synthesis pioneers at the University of Manchester. Projects were funded by the Ministry of Defence, the European Space Agency, the Royal Society, the Technology Strategy Board and QinetiQ.
In the Defence Research Agency (DRA) (1994-2001) together with a small team I pioneered the science of passive millimetre wave (PMMW) imaging and active techniques for security screening of personnel and all-weather applications (imagery that penetrates fog, cloud, dust-storm, brownout & smoke). This included developing the world’s first mechanical scanning (video-rate) PMMW (focal plane array based) imager, which evolved into the AVSEC security screening portal, vehicle screening portals and initiated work into imagers for all-weather helicopters. I led the development of the first physics based polarimetric scene simulation and parametric model for passive millimetre wave imaging, validating results over the band from 3 GHz to 325 GHz using a suite of PMMW imagers. I built up a comprehensive database of threat materials over the 90 GHz to 1.2 THz bandwidth, through regular measurements using a Fourier transform spectrometer. I used the sensor suite and models to investigate the feasibilities and capabilities of a diversity of applications including (buried and surface) landmine detection, the detection of concealed weapons and illegal substances on persons, and poor weather sensors for air, land and sea missions.
Nuclear fusion research
At the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics in Munich (1990-94) I designed, commissioned and used for research a suite of millimetre wave diagnostics on the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak (Germany’s most prestigious nuclear fusion research project) for measuring microwave to terahertz emission, under a Fellowship from the European (Framework) Atomic Energy Community (Euratom). The systems I used to characterise plasma temperature phenomena associated with the tokamak High/Low confinements modes and relativistic (few MeV) electron emission. The suite, a collection of mm-wave spectrometers, comprised a multi-channel heterodyne radiometer, a Fourier transform Michelson interferometer and a grating polychromator, implementing precision signal integration techniques for calibrations using thermal radiation sources.
At the Joint European Torus (on contract from Imperial College (1984-1990) I developed heterodyne radiometer diagnostics to measure plasma temperatures (in the region from 100 eV to 10 keV) from the cyclotron emission of mildly relativistic electrons over the band from 50 GHz to 500 GHz. I used this to research the evolution of magnetic islands around the rational flux surfaces and the evolution of Edge Localised Modes around the plasma edge regions of JET, these constituting internationally unique measurements which revised thinking on plasma heating and confinement schemes. I developed this system to become the principal JET temperature diagnostic for the research into highly localised (cm scale) and fast (microsecond) temperature phenomena.
Plessey Electronic Systems Research
In the system research group at Plessey, Roke Manor, I developed and demonstrated novel optical (near-infrared) mathematical processors using lasers, Bragg cells and CCD’s, for Fourier transform and cross-correlation analysis of radar and communications signals. I modelled and developed optical communication systems, LiDAR cloud radars and imager intensifier surveillance suites. I simulated acoustic beam-forming algorithms for the geo-location of threats, working with trials teams on firing ranges.
