Author and Manchester Writing School lecturer Jennifer Nansubuga Makumbi’s short story will be broadcast on BBC Radio 4.

‘My Sister Biira’ is all about a family secret, and will be aired at 3:45pm on Friday December 21.

The new work, commissioned specially for radio, is a taster of Makumbi’s forthcoming collection of short stories ‘Manchester Happened’ which is published in May 2019.

Makumbi, Lecturer in Creative Writing at Manchester Metropolitan University, is a Ugandan novelist and short story writer.

Earlier this year, she was awarded one of the eight 2018 Windham Campbell Prizes by Yale University – one of the richest and most prestigious literary prizes in the world.

She said: “This is my first story to be broadcast on BBC and I am both nervous and excited to hear it read aloud.

“The story is about the family left back in Uganda, when their loved one returns from Manchester unwell.

“It is about what seems and what is not, what can be articulated and the unsayable. How families conspire to protect their own.”
