The Department of English is staffed by one of the strongest and most diverse English research groups in the UK, running Undergraduate English courses via single, joint and combined honours routes, Masters courses in Creative Writing and English Studies, and a suite of Short Courses.
The BA (Hons) English programme is at the heart of the Department’s work, covering both traditional and innovative aspects of the discipline. As well as our main Single Honours English degree, we offer a Single Honours Creative Writing degree, and Joint Honours degrees in English and American Literature, English and Creative Writing, English and Film, English and Multimedia Journalism, Film and Media Studies, English Degrees with a Foundation Year and various Combined Honours degrees.
The Department boasts leading Masters programmes in Creative Writing, offering specialist routes in Novel, Poetry, Writing for Children & Young Adults, Scriptwriting and Creative Non-Fiction. Taught by practising writers, the MA and MFA can be studied on our Manchester campus or via online distance learning. The critical MA, in English Studies, offers two specialist pathways in Contemporary Literature, Film & Theory and The Gothic, as well as a general English Studies route, where students can build their own bespoke programme from a range of unit options. PhD study is available through our Centre for Creative Writing, English Literature and Linguistics (CELL).
The Department offers a suite of Short Courses and Continuing Professional Development courses; available to study as discrete, one-off units through a single term, with some also validated at Master's level.
