MFA / MA CREATIVE WRITING

Our Masters programme in Creative Writing will help you develop your writing skills through a blend of writing workshops and reading units, allowing you to explore the techniques and styles of modern and contemporary literature.

Creative Writing is available to study on campus in Manchester, and also from anywhere in the world via online distance learning (low-res or no-res).

TAILORED COURSE CONTENT

Our MA/MFA Creative Writing programmes can be tailored to suit your writing preferences.

With either course there is a range of units to choose from, all delivered by practising writers. Units include Novel (including Short Fiction), Poetry, Writing for Children & Young Adults, Scriptwriting or Creative Non-Fiction.

Studying an Master of Arts (MA) or Master of Fine Arts (MFA) offers different opportunities:

  MA MFA
  • Explore and practice techniques and styles of modern and contemporary writing and apply these through the development of your own creative work
  • Undertake a taught element blending writing workshops with reading units and an elective
  • An additional unit about the publishing industry
  • Submit the full-length manuscript of a completed novel, poetry collection, book for children or young adults, or book of creative non-fiction, or a feature-length script.

FLEXIBLE STUDY OPTIONS

You can study around your busy schedule with the MA/MFA Creative Writing as teaching on core units takes place in the evenings, with electives delivered on an intensive three-day model or studied independently with one-to-one supervision.

You can start the course in either September 2019 or January 2020 and there are multiple options when it comes to how you want to learn:

MA: 1 year full-time on campus, 2 years part-time on campus or part-time via our distance learning option.

MFA: 2 years full-time on campus, 3 years part-time on campus or part-time via our distance learning option.

If you choose to learn via distance learning, the core teaching is delivered via weekly text-based chat room sessions during evening teaching slots.
