News Editor at The Bolton News

“It gave me the confidence to believe I could achieve anything”
About my career

After I graduated, I completed a postgraduate qualification in journalism. I have been a journalist for almost 14 years at various local and regional newspapers. Two years ago I was appointed News Editor of The Bolton News, in charge of managing the news agenda and a team of 17 people.

My degree course gave me the confidence to follow my dreams. The expert tuition gave me the tools I needed to do this, as well as honing my writing skills. I wrote for the Manchester Met student magazine, Pulp, and organised many work placements with various newspapers. This experience was vital in not only getting on to my postgraduate course, but ultimately in finding a job. Students should take the opportunity to find their voice, getting as much experience as possible and making sure they use the University’s fantastic facilities before they graduate.

My top tip for students is…

Find out as much about your chosen field and make sure you get as much experience as possible.

I’m inspired by…

Dr Linnie Blake was one of my tutors throughout my degree and also my dissertation tutor. Her guidance, support, expert knowledge, and above all unswerving belief in me as an undergraduate was absolutely invaluable in me gaining my 2:1, something as an 18-year-old I would not have believed was possible. She really has a gift.

Why I love Manchester Metropolitan University

It gave me the confidence to believe I could achieve anything I wanted to, was a nurturing environment, a fantastic place to learn and I could not recommend it highly enough - being a student here really did change my life.
