Student Profiles

What I love the most about my course is the range of topics and books you can study. The units range from the classics to modern texts and there are so many different units to choose from, such as film units, creative writing units, American literature etc. I love the film unit I’m doing now as I love movies and I really enjoy being able to study film at an academic level. I also find Critical and Cultural theory really interesting as you study different theorists and look at the ways in which society and our culture has been shaped. I also love how there is so much more freedom in what you can write about compared to A-Level and can pretty much write about whatever you want if you can fit it into the brief. 

I have definitely gained a lot of confidence since coming to Man Met and feel like I have developed my presentation skills through the presentations I do in my course as well as leadership through my work within the university. 

I take part in extracurricular activities such as getting involved with societies; I am the chair of the Man Met Nerds Society, which I really enjoy and have made friends in other general interest societies such as Gamers, Anime and Vague. I get to plan socials every week and being on a committee is also something I can put on my CV. I have also made a lot of friends through the different societies at Man Met - there are so many to choose from so you get to meet a lot of people with the same interests as you. 

I am also a Student Ambassador, which involves working at Open Days and Visit Days. I really enjoy it and I get to make some money while studying at University, but with flexible hours so I can take shifts whenever I want to.

I am also a Make a Difference Ambassador, which allows me to take part in different outreach schemes with schools as well as getting some relevant experience on my CV. I have worked at a homework club where I help children from primary school age up to sixth form with their homework. I have also taken part in creative writing workshops at the Manchester Art Gallery.

I also volunteer with the Manchester Children’s Book Festival, which I really enjoy, I work as a storyteller on arts and craft stalls and it’s so fun to get involved with the events and meet really interesting people, including published authors! Recently, I was involved with the Harry Potter event at the Manchester Central library, which was a lot of fun.

I also work as a Primary Tutor with the Tutor Trust which has been a really good way to get experience in teaching and has helped me to decide whether I want to go into teaching in the future. 

Definitely look at the different units that are available on the course and look at the texts that are on the curriculum to see if there is any that interest you. What drew me to this course was the interesting units you can do in second and third year. 

...both the children and adults that I have worked with during my work as an ambassador and at the Manchester Children’s book festival, without who, I would not have realised that I want to pursue a career where I can work with children.

What I love about Man Met is all of the different opportunities that are available through the university and the connections you can make within the city.
