With over half of the world’s population now living in cities, the fundamental environmental challenges of the future lie in the ability to create sustainable urban environments.

The research undertaken by our group is international in scope and is at the interface between research and practice. We have undertaken a considerable amount of research locally in Greater Manchester and have global research networks, investigating urban environmental issues across the UK, Europe, China and Africa. We work with the public and private sectors on a range of initiatives and projects funded by the EU and UK Research Councils and Government departments (including Defra, Environment Agency, Scottish Government), and UK Research councils.

Our research broadly covers human systems, ecosystems, and socio-ecological integration in urban areas. Our specific areas of expertise include: urban ecosystem services, urban biodiversity, urban green space, spatial planning, transport, climate change adaptation, GIS and remote sensing analysis.
