Top marks for halls recycling

Recycling checks have been carried out in halls

Last week the Environment Team with the support of Residential Advisors conducted recycling checks, an opportunity for residents to turn trash into cash!

Students living in Booth, All Saints and Birley are visited where teams check and score their recycling efforts leaving praise or feedback on how they can improve.

Encouraging more and better recycling in halls will help achieve the University’s 60% recycling target by 2020 and instils positive behaviours in students. Top scoring flats won cinema tickets and were entered in to a prize draw to win £300! Residential Advisors at Birley also arranged an additional sustainability event where students could win prizes through playing games, designed to educate participants about environmental issues such as climate change and waste.

From the introduction of recycling checks and increasing the number of recycling streams, the team have increased the amount of waste being recycled in halls from 18.2% in 13/14 to 38.4% in 16/17.
