Summary

About our research

Our research focuses on how people’s identities and social positioning affect their health, wellbeing and life chances.

We recognise that experiences, clinical outcomes and access to resources vary within and between social groups, causing inequalities.

Through our research, we aim to better understand those inequalities and find new ways of tackling the problems they cause. We champion social justice.

We work in partnership with organisations outside of academia to make sense of the social, political, educational and economic situations that influence people’s health and wellbeing.

Our approach is evidence-based, using co-design and other participatory methods to investigate the needs of minority groups and marginalised perspectives.

We take great care to involve individuals and communities who are usually excluded from research or whose perspectives are often overlooked.

Much of our research makes comparisons - between and within communities, across geographical and national boundaries, and between how people expect their lives to be and how they actually turn out.

Within the cluster, we have four sub-groups:

  • Sexual and Reproductive Health
  • Gender-based Violence
  • Health and Social Care Inequalities
  • Inclusive Practice in Health and Social Care

Our focus

The big challenges to health and wellbeing require research and action at local, national and international levels.

That’s why we address the United Nations’ sustainable development goals, which seek to reduce inequalities, optimise health globally and achieve universal healthcare for all.

We focus on three areas:

  • health inequalities and socio-economic contexts of health
  • global perspectives in health and social care
  • health, social justice and marginalisation
