About us

About our research

We focus on how the brain controls movement, and look for ways to help people whose co-ordination or mobility are impaired - by ageing, developmental conditions or diseases such as Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s.

Our research cluster includes neuroscientists, physiotherapists, movement scientists and psychologists.

This multidisciplinary approach - measuring how people walk at the same time as looking at brain activity, structure and function - gives us a fresh perspective on difficulties affecting the lives of millions of people worldwide.

The techniques and analytical methods we have developed are brought together in our state-of-the-art gait laboratory in Manchester.

Our goals

Through our research, we’re aiming to learn how we can:

  • prevent falls as people age, particularly people with age-related conditions

  • develop better treatments for the factors that contribute to falls risk

  • use movement neuroscience to improve co-ordination
