Sociology, Criminology and Policing

The Department of Sociology is located on the University’s central Manchester campus and our 40-strong multi-disciplinary academic team includes sociologists, criminologists, evaluators and economists.

We undertake research, evaluation and consultancy. We also provide training in research and evaluation methodologies (quantitative and qualitative). Our clients in the UK and Europe include UK government departments and the European Commission, as well as prestigious funding bodies such as the UK’s Economic and Social Research Council and Nuffield Foundation.

English, Writing and Publishing

We work with educators, publishers, leading consumer brands and international literary organisations to train writers and teachers, to deliver literary events, and to produce material for print, audio and screen.

Our academics include distinguished practising writers and critics who work across several writing disciplines and genres under the creative direction of Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy.

The Manchester Writing School has international recognition as a leading centre of creative excellence. We deliver degree programmes and short courses, a vibrant series of public reading events, a leading programme of outreach activities, a major international writing competition and a biennial festival of children’s literature. Our trainers, all published authors, deliver workshops and events around the world.
