Our departments make up one of the longest-established humanities faculties in the north west. 340+ staff – including many international experts – provide distinct, stimulating programmes that prepare our students to go on to succeed in a diverse range of careers.
Humanities, Languages & Social Science is home to four departments and is split into five distinct areas:
The Department of English delivers a range of undergraduate, postgraduate and short courses, and is staffed by one of the strongest and most diverse new-university research groups in the UK. The department is home to the international Manchester Writing School, run under the creative direction of Professor Carol Ann Duffy DBE (UK Poet Laureate 2009-2019).

The department encompasses multi-disciplinary strengths in both teaching and research. Specialisms within the department include: ancient, medieval and modern History; international Politics; European Philosophy; Public Administration and global governance; American studies; Archaeology; and, local and regional heritage studies. Offering varied and challenging programmes of study in a thriving, research-led teaching culture, the department places great emphasis on providing students the supportive learning environment and key skills they need to succeed in both their studies at Manchester Met and in their future careers.

The department encompasses two distinct areas:
The department teaches a widening range of Modern Foreign Languages as well as offering undergraduate, postgraduate and commercial courses in Linguistics and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. It has a strong international, multicultural, inclusive and supportive atmosphere with many native language-speaking staff, foreign language assistants and international students. Extensive international connections give students a wide range of opportunities to spend up to a full academic year abroad. The department incorporates the university’s Language Centre, providing a range of British Council-accredited English as a Foreign Language (EFL) and Modern Foreign Language courses to students from all over the world, to better prepare them for the international opportunities of tomorrow.

The department is home to expert academics and highly experienced professionals teaching programmes that give our students experience of media production, dissemination and related technologies used in creative media jobs and the information communication professions. It is at the heart of one of the largest digital industry clusters in Europe, creating excellent opportunities for students to get first-hand working experience with locally based, internationally operating operations. Regular opportunities to network with the employers and clients of tomorrow are offered throughout students' time with us.

The department offers courses in Sociology and Criminology that provide an excellent understanding of key issues confronting Britain and the world. Expert teaching and research staff lead on several international research and policy projects and work with key agencies such as European, national and local governments, police forces and other public sector organisations.
