I'm currently an Leverhulme Early Career Research fellow within History interested in the history of the Holy Land, Pilgrimage, and Medieval travel more generally. I joined MMU in 2019 after teaching at Lancaster University, the University of Birmingham, and Nottingham Trent University.
When I'm not teaching I like being a nerd and rolling lots of dice, taking my kids out exploring the wilds of Lancashire and Cumbria, and desperately hoping that Derbyshire might win a cricket match for once or that Derby County won't find themselves playing in League One next year.

My two broader interests lie in the history of religious cultures and the history of travel in the Middle Ages. These interests come together in my research on pilgrimage (particularly to the Holy Land), mission, and the crusades during the period c.1000-1350. My current project is investigating the history of Holy Land pilgrimage during the formative period of 1000-1330, looking at the way in which pilgrimage practices changed during the period of the Holy Land crusades (1095-1291). It also explores the way in which Western pilgrims interacted with the local Christian and Muslim inhabitants of the Holy Land.
My interest in Holy Land pilgrimage also extends into the modern era and I am also interested in the practices and experiences of contemporary pilgrims to Jerusalem.
