As Head of History, Politics & Philosophy (HPP), I oversee the management of an innovative department of research-active scholars dedicated to serving the needs of a diverse and vibrant student population. A strong interdisciplinary ethos underpins the HPP curriculum and the department has critical strengths in ancient, medieval and modern History, Public History and Heritage, International Relations and Diplomacy, modern British and European Politics, Public Services, and European Philosophy. The staff teams I manage are enthusiastic about their subjects and dedicated to promoting a collegial, student-centred atmosphere and a positive student learning experience.

Head of Department
I welcome the opportunity to supervise undergraduate and post-graduate research MA and PhD students interested in exploring various aspects of European (including Britain) or American social and cultural history, especially with regard to issues of ethnicity, class, and citizenship, as well as those looking to study topics that link historical developments in Europe or the United States with those in the wider world.
My research and teaching interests involve the thematic study of ethnicity and nationalism, social movements, citizenship, and transnational migration within a comparative, global context.
