BA (Hons) Modern Studies
Civil Servant at the Department of Transport
The University gave me the confidence to do anything I wished to do.
- About my career
History had always been a personal interest and MMU provided a mature students’ course while also offering the option to study on the ERASMUS scheme. As I was 25 this was ideal and provided me the opportunity to study abroad hence, I spent my second year at the University of Helsinki, Finland.
After graduating, I went on to do a master’s degree and then I worked for architect Richard Rogers in a role I gained through an agency. The University helped me to reach my current position as a Civil Servant by giving me the confidence to do anything I wished to do, and opened up opportunities. The writing, presentation and communication skills I gained while studying are essential in my career and I would recommend current students use their time to also work on their presentation and networking skills which are essential for today’s job market.
- My top tip for students is…
Be willing to do any job to start with to gain experience in the work place.
- I’m inspired by…
The late Dave Pearson, who was instrumental in providing inspiration in all my work across the Modern Studies degree, including the Visual Studies units that were part of my BA (Hons).
- Why I love Manchester Metropolitan University
The friendliness of fellow students and staff, and the opportunites in the largest student city in Europe.
