"I really liked the second year module History in Practice, which gave me the opportunity to do a placement and work in an archive for the year, it was real life insight into what jobs are available for a history student."
What do you like most about your course?

I like the flexibility and the opportunities that the History degree have given me. In first year, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to study, in terms of what period of History, the way that the course is set out gave me the ability to study some of many, from Ancient, Early Modern, and Medieval to Modern. This allowed me to choose the area I was most interested in my second year, making my degree personal to my own interests. I really liked the second year module History in Practice, which gave me the opportunity to do a placement and work in an archive for the year and put together a project with a small group. It was real life insight into what jobs are available for a history student.

What skills do you feel you have gained/developed during your studies at Man Met?

I feel I have gained a lot of transferable skills during my time here. I have been able to develop my public speaking skills, as well as working independently and as part of a team. The skills have allowed me to feel more prepared to go into the world of work after Uni, and I'm about to start on a graduate scheme.

Have you taken part in any extracurricular activities or projects alongside your studies?

Alongside my studies I have been a Student Ambassador, an Outreach Ambassador and a Course Rep. The student ambassador work allowed me to be able to talk to prospective students and the social aspect of the ambassador work is great too, because it allowed me to meet other students who are not in my year or on my course. The outreach ambassador work really complimented my studies because it allowed me put into practice the skills I was developing as part of my course, the public speaking aspect, as well as having to work independently as a mentor to build my sessions and working as part of a team on the summer school.

Have you completed a placement?

I had a placement as part of my second year module History in Practice. I was at Wigan Archives once a week putting together a project with my group with the materials on the Pretoria Pit Disaster. We organised for some local history group members to come along and delivered a presentation for them.
