Assessment and Management of Neuromusculoskeletal Dysfunction in the Upper Quadrant

Course overview

This unit is intended to develop both cognitive and psychomotor skills of the practitioner specialising in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of neuromusculoskeletal dysfunction.

This unit is one of the compulsory modules on the Manual Therapy Clinical Pathway. Completion of the full Pathway would lead to eligibility to apply for membership with the Musculoskeletal Association of Chartered Physiotherapists [MACP].

This course is intended for

Suitable for HCPC-registered physiotherapists with a minimum of two years of clinical experience, of which six months should have been with neuro-musculoskeletal out-patients. The unit is focused on advanced problem solving of MSK conditions of the upper quadrant and is suitable for both NHS or private-based physiotherapists.

Course details

Key course content includes:

  • Functional anatomy and biomechanics
  • Subjective and objective patient examination
  • Differential diagnosis
  • Manual treatment techniques and other strategies
  • Clinical reasoning applied to management of neuromusculoskeletal dysfunction of the upper quadrant including the cervical and thoracic spine, shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand. 

Learning outcomes

  1. Critically explain mechanical and non-mechanical dysfunction of the upper quadrant with reference to the structure, function and biomechanics of the neuromusculoskeletal system including pathology, and pathogenesis.
  2. Critically evaluate and apply scientific and clinical evidence to the management of patients with neuromusculoskeletal dysfunction of the upper quadrant and demonstrate their ability to produce written work which demonstrates the ability to reflect.
  3. Demonstrate skilful assessment, management and clinical reasoning of individuals with neuromusculoskeletal dysfunction of the upper quadrant with reference to the indications, contraindications and indicators for caution that encompasses a biopsychosocial framework.
  4. Demonstrate an advanced level of manual therapy skills including mobilisation and manipulation techniques, exercise and education and other modalities relevant to the management of neuromusculoskeletal dysfunction of the upper quadrant.
  5. Demonstrate advanced use of interpersonal and collaborative communication skills in the assessment and management of individuals with neuromusculoskeletal dysfunction.

Entry requirements

Applicants must have already completed at least the teaching component of the 'Principles of Clinical Management for Patients with Neuromusculoskeletal Dysfunction (Foundation)' unit.

Suitable for HCPC-registered physiotherapists with a minimum of two years clinical experience, of which at least six months should have been with neuro-musculoskeletal out-patients. 

Assessment

Practical examination 50% of the unit mark.

Written assignment 50% of the unit mark.

Credits

For each unit of study you complete, you’ll receive a number of credits. These credits relate to the length and depth of study involved.

A 10-credit unit equates to 100 hours of student effort. These hours include face-to-face contact with a tutor in a one-to-one or group setting, reading and researching time, completing study tasks, online learning, and preparation and completion of an assessment.

You’ll need 60 credits to achieve a postgraduate certificate (PgCert), 120 credits to achieve a postgraduate diploma (PgDip), and 180 credits for a masters degree (MA/MSc).

Study levels

When you take a CPD unit, you’ll study at a specific level of learning and cover a specific topic.

Level 5 units are the academic equivalent of diploma level, level 6 units are at bachelors degree level, and level 7 units are at masters degree level.

Recognition of prior learning (RPL)
