Key areas:
Over the last 15 years I have acquired extensive experience of conducting research with vulnerable populations with complex needs, accessing mental health services and/or in contact with the criminal justice system. Prior to arriving to MMU, I have worked with the School of Social Sciences at Cardiff University, UK, being engaged in research evaluating a series of offender resettlement initiatives within the SW of England. Later on, I moved to the North of England and completed a PhD in criminology with the Applied Criminology Centre at the University of Huddersfield, exploring the impact of surveillance technologies on policing, crime prevention, and public reassurance, as well as the ethical implications of dataveillance and the police use of metadata.
Between 2009 and 2018 I worked as a postodoctoral researcher at the University of Liverpool, where I have been engaged in research exploring different aspects of violence and risk within mental health and criminal justice settings, with the view to identify safe, ethical, and effective approaches to care of vulnerable people with mental health problems and complex needs. I have developed a strong partnership with Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust, contributing to their Perfect Care research agenda, part of an ongoing collaboration between the trust and the University of Liverpool.
In July 2018 I have joined the School of Nursing, at Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) as a Research Fellow, working in collaboration with other departments and universities, and the local National Health Service (NHS) Trusts to develop and manage research projects in the area of mental health, coercion, and digital innovation in mental health. Projects I am currently involved in as a Principal Investigator (PI) or as a co-investigator include:
With colleagues here at MMU and partner NHS trusts and universities, I am currently developing other projects in the area of mHealth, as well as being involved in funding applications for research into violence and coercion in mental health settings.
