I graduated from Sheffield University with a BMedSci (Hons) degree and the Colin Stork Prize in Speech Science. In 2002 I was awarded a PhD by Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh. I have since gained a PGCert in Academic Practice with Distinction and I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
Between 2001 and 2005 I was employed as a Research Associate at Sheffield University working alongside Professor Rosemary Varley and Dr Sandra Whiteside on a programme of research into acquired apraxia of speech, funded by The Health Foundation.
I have worked as a speech and language therapist in the NHS in North Derbyshire and Sheffield providing support to children with speech, language and communication difficulties in mainstream school.
I am Admissions Tutor for the under-graduate and post-graduate (pre-registration) speech and language therapy programmes at MMU and First Year Tutor for the BSc(Hons) Speech Pathology and Therapy and Psychology and Speech Pathology programmes.
I contribute to learning and teaching in the areas of phonetics, phonology, speech impairment in children, and adult acquired dysarthria. I am a Unit Leader for Foundations of Communication 1 in the Faculty of Health, Psychology and Social Care, and for Language, Communication and Behaviour in the Faculty of Education.
In collaboration with Dr Sue Barry, I deliver CPD courses in phonetics for speech and language therapists.
I am an External Examiner for the BSc (Hons) Speech and Language Therapy programme at Birmingham City University.
My research interests include coarticulation, the acoustic analysis of speech, and phonetic transcription.
