What HR does – The Headlines

The success of the University depends on the people who work here, and that is what the HR Department is all about – people. We know that our staff are fundamental to the achievement of the University’s strategic aims. 

As HR professionals, we work with managers and staff, using our HR skills and people management expertise, to facilitate the best staff experience we can, so that staff feel engaged at work. This means:

  • Staff are proud to work at Manchester Metropolitan
  • Staff really care about their job and what they do
  • Staff genuinely want to give their best. 

This is because we know – and there is evidence - that when staff are engaged at work, this creates a high performance culture, which positively impacts on the student experience.

So, we support managers to ensure excellent leadership and management to achieve engaged, motivated and customer focused staff who provide our students with the best possible experience. That applies to the students we nurture and the people we employ - from academic staff through to professional services.

Our ultimate aim is to ensure a great staff experience, which in turn leads to a great student experience

What we do in a bit more detail….

In HR, we undertake a range of work which covers the whole of the employee lifecycle from recruitment, induction, personal development, progression to exiting the organisation.

We operate across all areas of the University’s activity, providing a comprehensive range of HR services. Specifically, our work involves:

  • Helping devise and implement people strategies and policies (e.g. in relation to staff recognition and reward, equality and diversity, staff engagement, wellbeing and health and safety).
  • Supporting and developing our leaders and managers to become the very best people managers, who engage and develop their teams and implement our policies and procedures in a fair and consistent way.
  • Operating a business partner model, whereby a team of HR professionals deliver a range of customer focused solutions for staff, and work with managers to assist them in bringing out the very best of individuals and teams. 
  • Providing a high quality transactional HR service to support all stages of the staff / employee life cycle.
