1. What do you like most about your course?

I love that the course enables me to see how the skills learned in lectures can be applied in a real-world setting. For example, the relationship that the university has with companies within the community has presented opportunities to work on research projects investigating the drug use in young people, and through volunteering, working to improve the lives of ex-offenders.

2. What made you choose Manchester Met?

The applied nature of the course - I wanted to make myself more employable.

3. Why did you choose to study an MA/MSc?

I studied BA (Hons) Sociology, and have always been fascinated by the behaviour of criminals and their motives.

4. Did you complete a placement, or have you taken part in any extracurricular activities/projects alongside your studies?

Yes, I completed a placement reviewing literature on drug use in young people and interviewed them on their use and any mental health implications. This has helped to improve my research skills, understanding and empathy, which is key when working with people in the criminal justice system.

5. What skills do you feel you have gained/developed during your studies at Manchester Met, and how do you think these will help you in your future career?

The course has already allowed me to further improve my career opportunities through its connections. I believe this course will help me in my career, as I now have practical experience and a breadth of knowledge around Criminology.

6. Did you take advantage of the links your department has to start building a network? What connections did you make that will help you in the future?

Yes, I used the university’s connection with CLI to volunteer helping ex-offenders, and this has culminated in a full-time job with good progression opportunities, which will help me to develop my skills and hopefully go into research later down the line.
