The Language Centre provides individual English language support for colleagues whose first language is not English.
We understand that lecturing, teaching, writing feedback or composing professional emails can be particularly challenging in a foreign language. If your first language is not English and you have identified your communicative language skills as an area for development, the Language Centre is here to help.
A tutor will work with you 1-2-1 to identify the challenges you face, and will meet you regularly to work on these skills. We make sure that your English coaching is grounded in the context you are working; for example, pronunciation work and vocal strategies to aid lecture delivery, or a review of sentence structure to enhance your written feedback to students. This allows you to see the impact of your language coaching on your professional practice.
If you feel you would benefit from English language coaching, we suggest that you discuss our 1-2-1 English Coaching with your line manager as your Department will incur a small fee for the provision. Alternatively, language development may have been identified on your PDR.
