Head of Modern Foreign Languages
"The most valuable skills that I have learnt through my degree were how to have confidence in my own ability and how to be more resilient."
My current role as Head of the Modern Foreign Languages Department in an inner city secondary school in Salford, is essentially to lead Modern Foreign Language teaching and learning at my school. I am responsible for results across the department and the promotion of my subject area within the whole school context.
The best thing about my degree was that it appealed to many of my interests. Literature, translation, interpreting, teaching and even socialising. Language learning is a mixed bag that really empowers you with a variety of skills once you graduate, putting you in good stead for a flourishing career. That being said, there is a healthy mix and the socio-cultural aspect of language learning must be consolidated outside the classroom environment. Whether that be from a bar stool, at a restaurant or at a coffee table, social interaction is a necessity.
The most valuable skills that I have learnt through my degree were how to have confidence in my own ability and how to be more resilient. Confidence derived from a deeper comprehension and aptitude in my subject area throughout my years at university. Strong resilience was cultivated within my tutor groups by my lecturers.
Yes, I did the Erasmus year. I lived in Perpignan, France, for 6 months and in Rome, Italy, for 6 months. I attended universities in both cities and I believe that this year abroad consolidated my subject knowledge as well as helping me to grow as a person. Without sounding too much like a cliché, it genuinely was the best year of my life.
Jump at every opportunity that presents itself and don’t be afraid to push yourself outside your comfort zone.
I’m inspired by passionate leadership.
The language department at Manchester Met stoked an ambitious streak in my personality that I never knew existed - from their infectious enthusiasm for their subject area, to their unwavering belief in my potential. For that I am eternally grateful and will never forget.
