Languages, Linguistics and TESOL

Lewis Preater

"Being able to express yourself fluently in another language about topics such as Art, Politics, and Society is an amazing feeling."
What do you enjoy most about your course?

As it is a language course the majority of our learning is interactive, which includes group work and conversations with peers and teachers. I also study Business which links to a lot of my Spanish units like Spanish Pro and some topics in Spanish Languages.

What has been your favourite module of the course so far, and why?

Translation and Interpreting because I really enjoy translating from Spanish to English on many different topics, from literary pieces, to news articles and song lyrics. I also enjoy practicing Interpreting although it is one of the more difficult modules I have taken.

How has this course helped you to prepare for your future career?

The year abroad in Spain has especially helped me prepare for the future as it is perfect to use in interviews and my CV. Many employers want to know about a time you have faced a challenge and how you dealt with it, so living abroad comes with perfect examples of this. It was also amazing for meeting people around the world who I am still in contact with and will no doubt help me in the future to have a wide network of contacts.

What opportunities have you taken advantage of while studying here? How has this added to your time at Manchester Met?

I have taken part in a Transforming Futures project which entailed an assessment centre for professional skills such as public speaking, interviews and group problem-solving. There have also been 1 to 1 or group coaching sessions to discuss my future plans and any obstacles I have or things I would like to improve.

Have you completed a placement or study abroad year? If so, who was it with and what did it involve?

I studied abroad at Universidad de Murcia in the southeast of Spain. I studied the modules Spanish Languages, Interpreting, Translation in culture/tourism and leisure/linguistics, and French. There were many more modules available and we were free to choose any as long as it wasn’t in English. I also lived in a flat with three Spanish-speaking people for the entire year.

How has studying in Manchester complimented your studies?

Manchester is a great city and I have never been short of facilities (libraries, sports centres, computer rooms) or things to do with my housemates and course mates. Manchester also has so many Spanish restaurants and Latino bars and club nights to practice my Spanish in my free time.

In a couple of sentences, describe what it’s like to be a student on your course.
