Suffrage Symposium: a convivial discussion in words and music

As part of our 2018 programme to celebrate the centenary of the partial enfranchisement of women, the Sylvia Pankhurst Gender and Diversity Research Centre is happy to host this exciting event. 

Scholars, activists, students and friends of the Centre will come together to share knowledge on the struggle for women’s suffrage. The day will feature presentations from women working on the suffrage movement with the opportunity for plenty of audience participation and debate.

  • 4.15pm - Introduction by Julia Clarke, Pro Vice-Chancellor and Dean of the Faculty of Business and Law, Manchester Metropolitan University. 
  • 4.30pm - Eleanor Byrne, Senior Lecturer in English, Manchester Metropolitan University: The Life of Suffragette, Edith Rigby.
  • 4.50pm - Fionna Barber, Reader in Art History, Manchester Metropolitan University: Constance Markievicz and Eva Gore-Booth: Sisters in Revolution.
  • 5.10pm - Dr Kate Cook, Head of the Sylvia Pankhurst Gender and Diversity Research Centre: Sylvia Pankhurst and the struggle for the vote.
  • Followed by Q and A and refreshments
