A Manchester Metropolitan law student has been awarded with a cash prize and a unique work experience opportunity for her outstanding performance in immigration law.

Sophie O’Kelly, who is in the second year of a full-time LLB undergraduate degree, achieved the top overall mark in the optional Immigration Law unit and has been recognised by expert immigration solicitors Latitude Law.

Sophie was awarded with a cheque for £250 at the Manchester Law School and will also undertake a week of work experience with Latitude Law.

Speaking about her award, Sophie said: “I've always had an interest in Immigration Law and to win such an award is just amazing.

I can't wait to see how the law works in practice and learn more about the area I aspire to work in. I am delighted that the hard work paid off."

Sophie will now be able to put her academic achievements into practice as she begins a week of work experience with a specialist immigration law firm.

Latitude Law have been providing invaluable advice and legal representation to clients in the north of England since 2007 and now boast one of the largest immigration law teams in the area.

Claire Livesey, Practice Manager at Latitude Law, said: “Latitude Law has a strong relationship with Manchester Metropolitan and we are delighted to reward the successes of its students.

“We look forward to welcoming Sophie to the firm when she undertakes her placement."

Manchester Metropolitan’s LLB qualifying law degree enables students to go on to train as a solicitor or barrister with the support of a huge range of employability opportunities such as the Law School’s mentoring scheme.

Kim Edmonds, Senior Lecturer and LLB Immigration Law Subject Leader, added: “I was delighted to present Sophie with her award for her achievements in the Immigration Law unit.

“She has put in a huge amount of time and effort to her studies and can now add to her experience thanks to the fantastic work experience opportunity provided by Latitude Law.”
