Phytomedical Compounds For Diabetes And Diabetes-Related Complications (DRC)

Workshop / 12th - 16th December 2017
Instituto Politecnico Nacional, Mexico City, Mexico

In Mexico, type 2 diabetes is increasing with 370 million cases expected for 2030 (9% of adults). Diabetes is their second cause of disability and the major associated cause of death, costing $3,430 million per year, making this workshop timely and important to Mexico.

As other developing countries, Mexico uses alternative therapies based on their culture of herbal medicine (phytomedicals), usually treating diabetes with wareke (Ibervillea sonorae).

This workshop aims to bring together researchers and health professionals working in phytomedicine, to discuss safe complementary treatments for diabetes and diabetes related complications (DRC).

Immediate effects of the workshop are new scientific and transferable skills for Early career researchers (ECRs): funding applications, networking, international academic and industrial collaboration. Also, a new network of scientists and healthcare professionals with expertise on phytomedical products for diabetes (PHYDIMED).

Long-term benefits include long lasting collaborations and joint funding to develop phytomedicals for diabetes, resulting in treatments for diabetes and DRC, to extend life expectancy and quality of life of patients, and reduce healthcare costs.

Deadline for ECR to apply: 31st October 2017

Notification of Results: 13th November 2017
