We represent one of the highest concentrations of health research excellence in the UK and we are well supported by significant recent investment in our state-of-the-art facilities.
We conduct basic and translational research to understand biological systems in health and disease. Our approach is interdisciplinary, involving collaborations with colleagues in engineering, mathematics, chemistry and computing to facilitate innovations such as developing biomaterials for use in vascular grafts, advanced antimicrobial biomaterial coatings, miniaturised ‘lab-on-a-chip’ devices and medical imaging devices for carotid artery disease.
We work closely with colleagues in industry and other organisations to ensure our research remains at the cutting edge of addressing many of the world’s most pressing societal challenges, such as ageing and personalised medicine. We are keen to enhance and extend our network of external partners to support industrial research and development, and innovation, for example through bespoke collaborative research projects, Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTPs), consultancy, and the sharing of specialist facilities.
