My profile

Biography

Dr Araida Hidalgo-Bastida is a Senior Lecturer in Regenerative Medicine and departmental international lead for Life Science. Her bioengineering group works on basic and industrial research, as well as collaborations with national and international teams on biomaterials and bioreactors for orthopaedic and cardiovascular regenerative medicine, and for in vitro 3D toxicological models for drug discovery. She disseminates her work internationally and influences digital pedagogy and curriculum though programme leadership and external examining.

She also champions Equality, Diversity and Inclusion strategies for staff and students at Manchester Met through her work in the Athena Swan working groups, as well as other university projects..

What I do

Interests and expertise

I am the International Lead for the department of Life Sc, in this role I support prospective international students looking to enrol into our courses, as well as once they have joined us on campus. I also support the internationalisation of the curriculum, and international educational partnerships. I am also the programme leader of the MBioMedSci (Hons) programme, where I support students, host inductions and coordinate the special research projects for their 3rd and 4th year.

As an academic I have both teaching and research roles. I teach and lead units in our BSc and MSc courses, which include lectures, tutorials, workshops, practicals and assessments. I work with the Study Skills department, Graduate School and International Office to host sessions for transitioning into UK’s and PG learning and teaching system; and contribute to the employability and equality, diversity and inclusion strategies to benefit students and staff.

My research enable me to deliver research-centre teaching and supervise many UG and PG students in related projects. My area of expertise is Regenerative Medicine, including Stem Cells, Biomaterials, Bioreactors and 3D Imaging; my team disseminates the work through national and international conferences, as well as publications.

Teaching

How I’ll teach you

The sessions I lead are based on inclusive and active learning pedagogies, combining delivery new material as well as activities to consolidate it. This is possible due to the range of tools, educational apps and virtual labs, in addition to lab work that is included in my teaching.

Teaching units: Introduction to Biomedical Sc, Biomedical Sc, Cell Sc, Biomedical Cell Biology, Research Methods, Advanced Biological Aspects of Disease, Recent Advances in Biomedical Research, Research Project, Medical Devices and Research, Introduction to Clinical Engineering.

Unit Leader for Advanced Biological Aspects of Disease, and Programme Leader for the Integrated Masters MBioMedSc (Hons).
