Dr. Mahmoud joined the Department of Life Sciences as a senior lecturer in Cellular & Molecular Physiology. He received his PhD in Physiology from Beni-Suef university (Egypt), where he studied the antidiabetic mechanism of citrus flavonoids and started his lecturer position at the same university. As a winner of the Erasmus Mundus postdoctoral fellowship award, Dr. Mahmoud joined the Department of Pharmacology, Faculty of Pharmacy, Granada University (Spain) to start investigating the role of PPARβ in endothelial function. He received the International Atherosclerosis Society (IAS, USA) 6-month fellowship and the 4-month STDF (Egypt) fellowship awards and spent 10 months working with Prof. Yvonne Alexander (MMU) on exploring the role of microparticles in endothelial function/dysfunction, and the protective potential of a novel class of small molecule glycomimetics against endothelial dysfunction and smooth muscle calcification and his work enabled MMU to take out a patent application. During his short visit to MMU, Dr. Mahmoud won the prestigious Alexander von Humboldt Foundation fellowship award and joined the Center for Cardiovascular Research at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin (Germany) for 2 years. His work focused on studying (a) the role of IGF binding proteins in glucose uptake in adipocytes and endothelial function, (b) the effect of glucagon on IGF-1 bioactivity in humans, and (c) the insulin-sensitizing effect of small molecule glycomimetics. Upon completing this fellowship, Dr. Mahmoud joined the Institute of Diabetes & Obesity at Helmholtz Zentrum München (Germany) as a senior postdoc. He developed a highly specific DNA aptamer targeting thermogenic adipocytes. In December 2019, he started his associate professor position in Cellular & Molecular Physiology in Egypt. Dr. Mahmoud’s research interests focus on pathophysiological mechanisms and novel therapeutic targets for disease, including diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease, and drug/chemical-induced toxicity.
