My profile

Biography

After completing a doctoral degree in pharmacy in Iran, I migrated to Australia to follow my passion for research. I completed a Masters of Medical Science by research, investigating the effect of a novel polyunsaturated fatty acid on the development of atherosclerosis in the University of Adelaide. Then, I was offered an APA scholarship from the University of Sydney to undertake a PhD to investigate the molecular mechanism linking diabetes with atherosclerosis. During my PhD, I also attracted a prestigious GSK postgraduate ward.

Joining RMIT’s Thrombosis and Vascular Diseases Laboratory as a postdoctoral researcher in 2010, I focused on the role of different regulatory mechanisms of platelets during thrombosis formation. I joined the University of Newcastle in 2013 as a postdoctoral. Within the first year, I established the Airway Cell Biology laboratory and Air Liquid Interface (ALI) cell culture in Priority Research Centre of Healthy Lungs in the University of Newcastle, and Viruses, Infections/Immunity, Vaccines and Asthma (VIVA) in the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI). Thereafter, I have established collaborations nationally and internationally, published manuscripts, attracted research funding, presented in national and international conferences and supervised and mentored a number of undergraduate and postgraduate students and junior staff.

I move from Australia to the UK to join Teesside University as a Lecturer in Biomedical Science in Sep 2018 and promoted to a Senior Lecture in 2021. I contributed to Teaching, Research and Scholarly activities at Teesside University. I led Genomics and Bioinformatics module (postgraduate), Cell Biology module (undergraduate) and Clinical Pharmacology module(undergraduate), and contributed to teaching in  Advanced Biological Aspects of Diseases module (postgraduate), Molecular and Cellular Pathology module, Human Ageing and Diseases module, Anatomy and Physiology module, Biological Methods module, Science Communications and Bioethics module, Clinical Correlations of Food and Nutrition module (postgraduate), Science Research Project module and Biomedical Science Research Project module. I supervised 18 final year research project students and 5 MSc research project students to successful completion. I have been also supervising a PhD student. I joined Manchester Metropolitan University in Aug 2022 as a Senior Lecturer in Cellular Genetics.

Interests and expertise

I am an academic with a passion for biomedical science research with the focus on respiratory diseases, education and communication of science.

Projects

My research interests are to understand the molecular mechanisms underlying respiratory diseases with the goal to provide novel and more effective interventions. My research focuses on epigenetic regulatory mechanisms, e.g. microRNAs and their targets, as one of the underlying mechanisms contributing to the pathology of asthma. I perform my research on human airway epithelial cells, which are the first line of defence against noxious inhaled particles and pathogens (e.g. respiratory viruses). The general hypothesis is that the structure and function of the epithelium is abnormal in asthmatics. My objectives are to find a clinically targetable epigenetic factor in epithelial cells of asthmatics to restore the airway epithelium integrity, using state-of-art epigenetic and proteomic techniques combined with novel drug delivery systems.

PhD and Research Opportunities

My laboratory offers PhD projects to understand the underlying mechanisms responsible for pathology of respiratory diseases. In particular, to understand the abnormalities of human airway epithelium in asthma and stimuli (e.g. respiratory viruses) that exacerbate this condition.

Teaching

I am contributing to the Scientist Training Program (STP). STP is part of the Department of Health’s Modernising Science Careers (MSC), a UK-wide government initiative to address the training and education needs of the whole healthcare science workforce in the National Health Service (NHS). I am leading the Introduction to Genomic Counselling Unit (6H7V0012). I am also the academic supervisor of the trainees in Respiratory and Sleep Science in Research Methods (6ACP7114), Research Project 1 (6ACP7115) and Research Project 2 (6ACP7116). Further, I contribute to teaching Advanced Biological Aspects of Disease Unit (6H7Z1002), Recent Advances in Biomedical Research Unit (6ABM7135) and Disorder Case Study Unit (6ABM7110) at postgraduate level.

I am also contributing to Foundation Human Cell & Genetics (6H3Z3003), Research Skills and Employability (6H4Z1022), Genetic Science (6H6Z1038), Cell and Molecular Biology Unit (6H4Z1023) and Project (6H6Z1032) units at undergraduate level.

I am co-supervising one candidate for Doctoral Research and Innovation in Clinical Science Unit (6ACP8024) at MMU and supervising a PhD student at Teesside University. To date I have supervised 3 PhD students to successful completion.

Supervision

PhD and Research Opportunities

My laboratory offers PhD projects to understand the underlying mechanisms responsible for pathology of respiratory diseases. In particular, to understand the abnormalities of human airway epithelium in asthma and stimuli (e.g. respiratory viruses) that exacerbate this condition.

During the PhD projects the candidates will learn and use a wide range of novel techniques, including advanced cell culture, epigenetics, genetics, and protein detection techniques, in vitro.

Are you interested in developing new skills to progress your career? The Moheimani’s lab is always searching for talented and driven students to join the team.

  • Funded Positions: These will be advertised as they become available.
  • Self-Funded Positions: There is a variety of projects available for students wishing to self-fund their postgraduate studies (MRes or PhD). Please contact Fatemeh if you would like to discuss this further.
