BIOGRAPHY

Marilena is Lecturer of Haematology at Manchester Metropolitan and an Honorary Research Fellow at Queen Mary University of London. Since completing her PhD in Vascular Biology and Pathophysiology at the University of Perugia, she has worked in several international Academic labs where she has built a successful research career studying platelet biology and pharmacology of anti-platelet drugs. Marilena worked in the laboratory of Professor Denisa Wagner at the Harvard Medical School in Boston, where she characterised the use of recombinant human ADAMTS13 and tPA-coated nanoparticles as thrombolytic drugs. This work was partially supported by a fellowship from the Foundation BLANCEFLOR Boncompagni-Ludovisi. She then worked with Dr Alicia Garcia Arroyo in Madrid at the CNIC (Spanish National Center for Cardiovascular Research) studying the involvement of platelet matrix metalloproteinases in angiogenesis. Since moving to the UK in 2012, she worked at the University of Reading with Professor Jonathan Gibbins to study the biogenesis of platelet thiol isomerases. Subsequently she moved to Queen Mary University of London where in Tim Warner’s lab she characterised the eicosanoid profiles underlying the anti- and pro-thrombotic actions of aspirin in the cardiovascular system.

Marilena is now establishing her own laboratory at Manchester Metropolitan. Her main research is on the role of platelet-derived lipid mediators in host immune response to fungal pathogens, especially Candida albicans and Aspergillus fumigatus. This ambitious programme brings together platelet biology, immunology, lipidomics and bioinformatics and it has been funded by the prestigious Academy of Medical Sciences Springboard Award that Marilena has received in February 2022. To support her research, Marilena has forged several collaborations with mycology experts such as Dr Neil McCarthy (Queen Mary University of London) and Professor Katrien Lagrou (Katholieke Universiteit Leuven). Moreover, she collaborates with Professor Kimberly Martinod (Katholieke Universiteit Leuven) who is a worldwide expert on Neutrophil Extracellular Traps (NETs) biology.

Interests and expertise

I teach Haematology to undergraduate and postgraduate students.

I’m a scientist and my research brings together platelet biology, immunology and microbiology with the aim to find platelet-mediated immune mechanisms regulating host response to fungal pathogens. For this purpose I use different approaches including flow cytometry, confocal microscopy, lipidomics and bioinformatics.
