Youthquakes: young civic engagement and political action in challenging times

How do young people ‘do politics’ in 2019? This project investigates how a continuing crisis of austerity, precarity and insecurity affects young people’s politics. The research investigates young people’s sense of internal and external political efficacy, their sense of identity and belonging in democratic society, and their individual and collective political behaviour.

Topics of research include:

• Learning from young people about their political practices.
• Listening to their experiences of civic engagement in a continuing climate of precarity, climate crisis, austerity and related effects.
• Exploring the shared and divergent practices and experiences of young people.
• Unfolding opportunities to explore young civic engagement at important political junctures such as the rapid expansion of youth-led climate action.
