We are an influential arts research centre, with a varied range of research specialisms and disciplines across art, performance, media, digital art, architecture, design and fashion.

You can study masters and doctorate (PhD) level postgraduate courses. Both part-time and full-time courses are available.

You can propose your own research project. If your proposal is accepted you’ll get ongoing support from our experienced academics and research groups.

In particular, you will get help to develop your research from your supervisor, who will constructively challenge you through studio work and tailored tutorials.

We encourage you to take part in conferences and seminars, as well as exhibiting your work at museums, galleries and festivals, to raise your profile and build your experience. Financial support may be available for these activities, as well as for research expenses, field work, arts events and distribution.

Manchester Met is a member of the North West Doctoral Training Consortium. This could help you to join academic peers from other universities in training and events across the north west region.

You’ll benefit from regular tutorials and an annual review, as well as a personal development portfolio to help you reflect on your progress and learnings.

Writing, making, reading or discussion — or a combination of these methods — can all be submitted as evidence of your achievements, whether visual, written, digital or aural. These practical and studio-based submissions will also be supported by a written critical report.

Our courses begin in late September, with more enrolment opportunities in January, April and July. Events and teaching normally take place on Wednesdays.
