Good news from the Department of Life Sciences (April 2018)

Here's a round up of good news from the Department of Life Sciences:

Dr Araida Hidalgo and Claire Murtala were awarded a small grant from the Sylvia Pankhurst Gender Research Centre to host two events for KS2 and KS3 students as part of the International Women’s Day celebrations (8-9 March). Pupils enjoyed a screening of an age-appropriate movie with popcorn and drinks, followed by a tour of the labs, highlighting the opportunities in healthcare sciences for women.

Dr Lisa Coulthwaite has written a short news piece about the February 'Meet the Employers' event for the Institute of Biomedical Science's website.

Alex Ireland has been invited to join the Programme Organising Committee for the International Conference on Children's Bone Health next June in Salzburg, Austria.

Dr James Redfern, Professor Jo Verran, Dr Lubomira Tosheva and colleagues from University of Leuven have had a paper accepted in ACS Applied Nano Materials called "Toxicity and antimicrobial properties of ZnO@ZIF-8 embedded silicone against planktonic and biofilm catheter-associated pathogens". A brand new journal for 2018, it’s the sister journal of the well-respected ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces.

Professor Jamie McPhee, Dr Mat Piasecki, Professor Hans Degens and colleagues had a paper accepted in The Journals of Gerontology: Biological Sciences. "The contributions of fibre atrophy, fibre loss, in situ specific force and voluntary activation to weakness in sarcopenia”. This work was 7 years in the making and includes 5 years longitudinal follow-up of elderly volunteers.

Professor Craig Banks, Pete Gough (and others)  have been awarded a grant from the NHS / Devices for Dignity (approximately 50K) to develop “Child Upper Limb 3D Printable Prosthetics”.

Professor Yvonne Alexander has been invited as a Keynote Speaker at the European Society for Microcirculation Joint with the European Vascular Biology Organisation 1st Summer School in Dresden.
