As part of a special Manchester Writing School International Literature Week, we are delighted to welcome Iraqi novelist, poet, screenwriter and documentary film maker Ahmed Saadawi and his English translator Jonathan Wright to Manchester Metropolitan University.
Ahmed Saadawi won the 2014 International Prize for Arabic Fiction and France’s Grand Prize for Fantasty for his novel Frankenstein in Baghdad. The novel tackles the aftermath of the American occupation of Iraq, following a nameless figure made from the remains of bombing victims seeking revenge against their killers. It was described by The New York Times as “a haunting allegory for sectarian violence”. Ahmed will be reading from and talking about his work, and answering questions from the audience. The event celebrates the publication of Jonathan Wright's English translation of the book. Refreshments will be available on arrival and copies of Ahmed’s books will be available from Blackwell’s bookstall, with signing after the event.
Ahmed lives and works in Baghdad – a UNESCO City of Literature. This special event celebrates Manchester’s designation as a UNESCO City of Literature and is presented in partnership between the Manchester Writing School and Manchester Centre for Gothic Studies with support from the British Council. The event is free to attend and all are welcome but pre-booking via EventBrite is essential.
