University colleagues win prestigious awards
Staff members recognised for outstanding teaching
Advance HE (formally the Higher Education Academy) have recognised Haleh Moravej, Senior Lecturer in Nutritional Sciences and Carol Ainley, Head of the Department of Life Sciences, for their impactful teaching at the University by awarding The National Teaching Fellowship Award and The Collaborative Award for Teaching Excellence.
The National Teaching Fellowship
Haleh Moravej is one of the select few to be awarded a National Teaching Fellowship (NTF), which celebrates and recognises exceptional teaching each year.
Haleh has been recognised for her outstanding, creative and impactful contributions in the area of entrepreneurship and sustainability in learning and teaching.
Haleh’s Fellowship is in recognition of some highly innovative and inter-disciplinary dimensions of her work.
On teaching, Haleh tells us:
“I love learning and being at the University allows me to learn all the time, from inspirational colleagues to new innovations and linking them to other disciplines. Working at Manchester Metropolitan allows me to share my passion.
“Teaching for me is all about human growth and making a difference to young people’s lives. In an uncertain future where economically, environmentally and politically nothing is known, teaching can become the place of genuine human connection.
“I have always wanted to create an authentic educational experience for my students, connect with them and inject real creativity in all that I do with them.”
Sam Harrison, a Nutritional Sciences graduate comments:
“Haleh’s innovative, interactive and engaging sessions not only informed myself and my fellow students of the main issues surrounding global sustainability, but gave us the tools to take responsibility for our own potentially wasteful attitudes.
“Haleh always goes above and beyond to provide mentorship and guidance in all aspects of our student lives and future careers - encouraging and honing our creativity to reach our true potential.”
In addition to her specialist expertise in nutrition, Haleh founded MetMUnch – a student-led programme that explores health, sustainability and entrepreneurship.
Collaborative Award for Teaching Excellence
The Manchester Academy of Healthcare Scientist Education (MAHSE), have also been awarded the prestigious Collaborative Award for Teaching Excellence.
The awards celebrate the outstanding contribution of teams across an institution and cross-institutionally in learning and teaching.
Established in 2012, MASHE is a collaboration between The University of Manchester, Manchester Metropolitan, The University of Salford and partner NHS Trusts.
Under the leadership of Professor Phil Padfield, formerly of The University of Manchester and deputy-leadership of Carol Ainley, from Manchester Metropolitan, MAHSE teaches trainee healthcare scientists who are completing the NHS Scientist Training Programme (STP).
The cross-institutional programme has been recognised as an exemplar of teaching innovation, excellence and imagination, where students have a strong sense of belonging.
On the work of MAHSE, Professor Helen Laville, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Education said:
“MAHSE demonstrates an effective and energetic approach to working across the complex institutional frameworks of multiple HE institutions, health care providers, professional bodies and a determination to deliver innovative and exciting teaching.
“To have established a collaboration that services as an exemplar of teaching innovation, excellence and imagination is an outstanding accomplishment.”
