More than 60 Manchester Metropolitan student athletes are heading to Sheffield this weekend to take part in the 10th annual British University and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Nationals tournament.

They will join around 6,000 students to descend on the city for the three-day competition, all hoping to take home one of 60 highly coveted medals across eight different sports.

Manchester Metropolitan students will be competing across seven sports: swimming, athletics, badminton, fencing, judo, climbing and karate.

Among the students attending will be nine of Manchester Metropolitan’s Sports Scholars, including long jumper Kevin Metzger who is looking to improve on last year’s bronze medal.

Swimming scholar Chloe Golding, who was selected to represent England in the 2018 Commonwealth Games and won two bronze medals in last year’s competition, and para-swimmer Tully Kearney, who got gold in the 400m freestyle, will also be among those attending.

Jérôme Read, Head of Performance Sport at Manchester Metropolitan, said: “The development and progression of a number of Manchester Met sports will be showcased at this well organised and supported event in Sheffield.

“For many of our student athletes, this is a target competition on their University sporting calendar and their performances can lead to some individuals being spotted as rising stars by their national governing bodies.

“For many student athletes, to compete, support and be involved in a multi-sport event such as this one can rate as one of the highlights of their wider student experience.”

BUCS Nationals is the largest annual multi-sport event in the UK, bringing the best of Britain’s university athletes together.
