HMRC 'Tax Academy'

Business team devises unique programme

MANCHESTER Metropolitan University is to provide a new qualification to HM Revenue and Customs.

HMRC will offer its people a MMU Foundation Degree and a top-up BA (Hons) degree in Professional Studies in Taxation, accredited at the university.

It is the latest employer-based training contact signed by MMU Business School following similar partnerships with the Bank of New York Mellon, PWC and Tesco.

The part-time course, announced today Thursday, will see 400 HMRC workers studying at the “tax academy” by September.

Work-based assessment

Nicole Newbury, head of the HMRC tax academy, said the additional skills would help give staff “the confidence to take on the best of the private sector tax experts in tax disputes”.

The four-year course, devised by tax experts within MMU’s Accounting, Finance and Economics team, and involves a mix of university-based and online study with work-based and academic assessment.

The MMU team was appointed after a competitive process against other universities, and their input is seen as vital in improving the performance of the government department.

Dr Mary Meldrum, associate dean for enterprise, at MMUBS said: “Congratulations to the team who have developed this joint programme. Again it puts MMU at the forefront of professional workforce development in the area of business and finance.”
