MMU wins UK 'Building of the Year'

Stunning facilities for students, researchers and business

A UNIVERSITY building has picked up the coveted Prime Minister's Award for Better Public Buildings

Manchester Metropolitan University’s Business School and Student Hub won the award at the British Construction Industry Awards.

The MMU Business School and Student Hub sits on the south-side of the Mancunian Way and has become a centrepiece of the university’s £300 million redevelopment at All Saints.

With its distinct ski-slope roof, it rises from four storeys to seven, offering a dazzling mirrored presence to the new-look campus.

Inspiring

The £75million school opened in September 2012 to house the UK’s largest university business school, with more than 5,500 students.

It was designed by the London-based Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios and was recently named among four outstanding examples of architecture in the north west by the Royal Institute of British Architects.

Judges described it as “a masterpiece of simple concept, fine detailing and thoughtful and inspiring layout appropriate for graduates entering the business community".

It’s strong eco-credentials in heating, lighting and waste – played a key part in MMU’s being named the UK’s greenest university in 2013.

Prime Minister

Vice Chancellor Professor John Brooks, who collected the award from Prime Minister David Cameron said: “This is super news for our students, staff and the business community who use the building.

“World-class environments support excellence and this is a very proud day for MMU.”
