Professor Wolfe Mays

Sadly missed

We announce with regret the death of Professor Wolfe Mays, scholar and teacher of philosophy.

Beginning his long career at the University of Edinburgh in 1945, he was successively Lecturer and Reader in Philosophy at the University of Manchester from 1946 until his retirement in 1979, and from 1979 until the present, Emeritus Leverhulme Fellow and Visiting Professor at Manchester Metropolitan University.

He continued as editor of the Journal of the British Society for Phenomenology, which he founded in 1970, and was an active participant in the weekly Human Sciences Seminar which he inaugurated with David Melling twenty-five years ago. He will be greatly missed.

Wolfe's funeral will take place on Friday, 28 January. Those wishing to attend are invited to
gather at his house at 54 Spath Road in Didsbury, South Manchester, between 13:15 and 13:30 in order to proceed to the Chapel at Southern Cemetery, where a service will take place at 13:45. He will afterwards be buried next to his wife.
