Malcolm Garrett design part of History of Lancashire in 70 Objects
The project explores Lancashire's cultural heritage
Objects from museums, galleries and heritage centres across Lancashire were selected to be part of the History of Lancashire in 70 Objects project to mark the 70th anniversary of Lancashire Life magazine.
While hundreds of pieces were put forward for consideration, only 70 items made the final list.
One of the items selected was the original record sleeve for the Buzzcocks’ single ‘Love You More’, designed by alumnus Malcolm Garrett and held by Manchester Metropolitan University’s Special Collections.
Stephanie Boydell, Curator of Special Collections at the University, said: “I am really pleased that ‘Love You More’ was selected, especially because it was chosen by our students, staff and the public in an online vote. It was one of four objects that we thought best represented our collection’s links to the region. Hundreds of people of voted for Malcolm Garrett’s design.
“It’s a wonderful opportunity for us to show off our collections in Lancashire Life and also to show the contribution that Manchester Metropolitan has made, and still makes, to the cultural heritage of the county of Lancashire.”
‘Love You More’ holds a special place in many Lancastrian hearts because it was displayed on the wall of The Kabin on Coronation Street for years in late 1970s and early 1980s, when it used to stock records.
The single represents the unique and outstanding contribution Manchester has made to Britain’s cultural industries and, in particular, how Manchester has been at the heart of the British music scene for many years.
Released in 1978, the artwork for the single was designed by internationally renowned graphic designer and alumnus of the University, Malcolm Garrett. Many of Garrett’s record sleeve designs from the 1970s and 80s are now iconic.
Garrett studied graphic design at what was then Manchester Polytechnic between 1975 and 1978.
Books, clothing, toys and ephemera drawn from the collections of the designer are on display in the ‘Collecting Malcolm Garrett – Snapshots from the World of Tomorrow’ exhibition. The exhibition is open until 23 March 2018 as part of Design Manchester’s DM17 Festival.
