About us at the Poetry Library

What we do

Based in the heart of Manchester, a UNESCO City of Literature, we are developing an extensive collection of contemporary poetry from books to recordings, in multiple languages.

We aim to create an exceptional poetry research centre, a space where poetry belongs to everyone, and can be enjoyed and celebrated.

We recognise the value and impact of poetry on individuals and communities. This is something at the heart of what we do, that will be continually evaluated and evolved.

A place where you can walk in and know that whoever you are and wherever you are from, poetry – like all art – belongs to you

Jean Sprackland

Who we work with

We work locally, regionally, nationally and internationally with the widest range of people to create a place where language is celebrated in all its diversity.

We nurture and develop all those inspired by poetry, from schoolchildren to professional poets. Our programme, space and collection are a rich resource for anyone to enjoy.

We are the only poetry library in the UK to be supported by a university. It builds on the University’s esteemed reputation for poetry and creative writing through the Manchester Writing School.
