Poetry in Recording

We have a special focus on poetry recordings, including on CDs, cassettes and vinyl. The audio collection is reference only and can’t be borrowed, however we have everything you need to listen to recordings at the Poetry Library. Headphones can be provided on request, or you are welcome to use your own if you prefer. Please ask at the desk for help.

The oldest recording of a poet reading their work is from 1889, Robert Browning reading an extract from his poem “How They Brought the Good News from Ghent to Aix”.

Poetry on vinyl

In 2021 we invited writer, musician and novelist Anthony Joseph to curate our vinyl collection. This culminated in a special lecture on the history of poetry on vinyl and the Poetry on Vinyl exhibition from 14 February - 22 April 2022.

To discover the full list of Anthony’s selections, from Dylan Thomas to Holly Pester and Eugene B. Redman, use the reading list below.
