SciBar: November

Lass O'Gowrie

The third SciBar of the 2017/18 series is with Dr. Luiz Cesar Peres

November's topic is: Twist and Shout: The Umbilical Cord Coiling Issue

Of all foetal organs, the only one that may never be missing is…the placenta! Embryos and foetuses can develop and even be born with no brain, no heart, no lungs or kidneys etc. but the placenta is absolutely essential for the development of life. The umbilical cord is one of the components of the placenta and is the single lifeline of the foetus so it is of great importance, but most of us think of it as a long, slimy structure that needs to be tied and severed to release the baby. The more we study it, the more fascinating it becomes and one of its features is the coiling. If it is there then it is important. Do you want to know why? Just pop in.

This event will take place on Monday 27th November from 5:30pm onwards. The talk will last around 45 mins, with a quick break before a question and answer session and the chance for further discussion while enjoying a few drinks in the cosy settings of the Lass O’Gowrie pub. No scientific background needed, just turn up and join in!
