SciBar: May

Lass O'Gowrie

SciBar: May

The seventh and final SciBar of the 2017/18 series is with Dr. Sarah Withers, Lecturer in Biomedical Sciences at University of Salford.

May's topic is: Fat: friend or foe?

Dr Withers’ talk will discuss whether fat is all bad. Fat has often been looked at as the enemy in cardiovascular disease, but why? Dr Withers has studied the cardiovascular system for over a decade, and for many of those years looked at how the fat around the arteries can impact on how well they work and why, when we become obese, they don’t work so well. More recently some of this work has moved into the realms of cancer and dementia. Fat cells can no longer be seen as inert sacks of lipids, but cells which communicate with many others to impact our health beyond what you may expect.

This event will take place on Tuesday 29th May from 5:30pm onwards. The talk will last around 45 mins, with a quick break before a question and answer session and the chance for further discussion while enjoying a few drinks in the cosy settings of the Lass O’Gowrie pub. No scientific background needed, just turn up and join in!
