We were commissioned by one of Sweden’s most distinguished comprehensive universities to provide its students with an immersive introduction to life, culture and education in Britain.

Umeå University, Sweden – Times Higher Education 29th best university in the world under the age of 50 years, 2013 – commissioned Manchester Metropolitan University’s Department of Sociology to provide a British Studies course for students on its teacher training degree course.

The department designed a bespoke course covering the topics of:

Cultural studies
Popular culture
Multiculturalism
British and local history
Education, and
Politics

Course structure

This 6 week UK-based course was a compulsory, credit-bearing module of the teacher training degree for further education and primary education levels and included:

Interactive sessions with guest speakers who are experts in their area
Sessions supported and facilitated by two course leaders
Visits to key UK locations and schools
Reflective practice as a key element
Individual tutorials with project supervisors
Placements for all students in two schools or further education colleges, for one day each
