I joined MMU in September 2014 following six years at the University of Bedfordshire where I was Assistant Director of a social care research centre, the Tilda Goldberg Centre for Social Work and Social Care (TGC). Prior to that I held lectureships/senior lectureships at Birmingham and Warwick universities respectively. I completed my PhD on Women's Perspectives: the Role of Alcohol in Violence to Women at University of Hull in 2003.
I am a registered social worker, with a background in mental health, homelessness, and substance use in both the UK and USA. I have also worked for the probation service and with women experiencing domestic abuse. In addition my voluntary work in palliative care, needle exchange programmes, with people with HIV/Aids, and substance use services has kept me in touch with social care and social work practice.
I lead the Substance Use and Associated Behaviours (SUAB) Research Group and SUAB International Network.
I currently co-facilitate the dissertation module for the MA in Social Care and contribute to other units on the social work and social care programmes within MMU and as a guest lecturer for external programmes.
I currently have 10 PhD students studying at MMU and three who have recently successfully completed their PhDs. Current students include:
Albert Yates - Ancient Greek Philosophy and Addiction
Helen Ogilvie - Student alcohol consumption and the transition to university
Sarah Fox - Domestic violence and substance use: women's perspectives

My research and practice interests stem largely from my practice experiences in the UK and the USA. These include alcohol and other drug use, domestic and sexual abuse, child to parent violence, and mental distress.
