"I feel like I have gained transferrable skills that will stay with me even after finishing my degree"
What do you like most about your course?

My course has helped open my eyes to the world around me, and to shape my understanding of the different societies within it. Gaining a unique and valuable insight into the social change going on in the world; and their ripple effects on societies from across the globe to the ones closer to home. For instance, impacts on society in the UK following the 2008 recession/ stock market crash, in the way of job market, housing market, and changes in social attitudes. I like that my course can offer evidence and reasoning behind certain changes in society; without biased opinion or media influence – allowing you to form your own judgements.

What skills do you feel you have gained/developed during your studies at Man Met?

In my time at Manchester Met, I feel like I have gained very transferrable skills that will stay with me even after finishing my degree. For instance, paying attention to detail, using my initiative, and working towards deadlines has allowed me to develop my communication skills with others; be it in the form of an essay or in a structured verbal debate. Also, learning not to be afraid to ask questions, even if they seem trivial. As well as putting yourself out there and having a go at things, for example, becoming a Student Ambassador – before joining Manchester Met I would have been too shy and nervous to even consider talking to others about my course.

What is your top tip for other students looking to study this course at Manchester Metropolitan University?

Be prepared, and arrive at university ready to start; when possible look at the reading lists/essential books before beginning the course. Having some kind of idea what modules you’re studying and what reading goes along with it can give you a little bit of a head start when it comes to studying.
