"The quality of the teaching and the enthusiasm shown by all the lecturers made me discover a passion for numbers I did not know I had!"
What do you like most about your course?

The teaching is what I like most about my course. When I started my undergrad in Sociology, I had no inclination towards quantitative research whatsoever, but the quality of the teaching and the enthusiasm shown by all the lecturers made me discover a passion for numbers I did not know I had! That passion led me to do a Masters in quantitative methods, and I couldn’t think of a better place to do it; I wanted to carry on being taught by the excellent team in the Q-Step centre, and to have their passion continue to inspire me.

What skills do you feel you have gained during your studies at Man Met?

I have gained a wealth of experience at Manchester Met, discovering skill sets I never knew I had, such as tutoring other students, presenting academically, and self-discipline.

Overall, Man Met has taught me to have confidence in my own abilities, which is something that will benefit me for the rest of my life.

Have you taken part in any extracurricular activities alongside your studies?

I’m currently setting up the first Manchester Met society for Quantitative Methods; Q-Soc, which I hope will become a significant part of the MMUnion. I want the Society to help bring together the wide variety of students and staff who make the Quants department such a vibrant and energetic place to be and I can’t wait to get it up and running properly! I have organised one or two small events as a preparatory step, prior to the full Society being launched and these have been highly successful. Bringing together the MSc students and those pursuing PhDs was invaluable and a lot of fun. These kind of experiences, where students can share experiences, discuss potential progression paths and also come together as part of a community, have been an essential part of developing myself as a student and as a member of the University.

What is your top tip for other students looking to study this course at Manchester Metropolitan University?

My top tip would be to give it your all, and not be afraid to try new things!
